OATS & WHISKY GALORE! There are many who would argue that there is no better way to enjoy a bowl of traditional Scottish porridge than accompanied by a wee dram of one of Scotland's finest malts.
The village of Carrbridge - home of the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship - stands on the doorstep of the famous Speyside Malt Whisky Trail. It is therefore only natural for whisky to be included in our extended porridge championship programme. The whisky celebrations get off to a flying start on the evening of Thursday October 7 at the Craggan Mill Restaurant on the road to Grantown-on-Spey which will be hosting a Whisky Kitchen Dinner - a magnificent three course meal with a specially selected Speyside malt to compliment each course. The cost is £40 per person. Tel: 01479 872288. On the evening of Friday October 8, international whisky ambassador, Martyn O'Reilly will be unravelling the Mystery of Malts at a special whisky tasting from 6.30pm - 7.30pm at Carrbridge Village Hall. The introduction to some of Scotland's best malts, sponsored by leading malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail, is designed to give those new to whisky tasting an insight into the secrets, folklore and culture surrounding Scotland's "water of life". The cost is £5 per person. Tel: 01479 841211. Sunday October 10 sees expert porridge makers from far and wide gather in Carrbridge for the 17th annual World Porridge Making Championship. The contest gets underway with a wee dram for all the judges and competitors as they raise their glasses for the traditional "Toast to the Porridge". As Master of Ceremonies for the day, Martyn O'Reilly will not only be making sure the championship runs smoothly but during the cooking heats will also be sharing his passion for whisky in providing a whistle stop tour around some of Scotland's best known distilleries. While the newly crowned 2010 World Porridge Making Champion will undoubtedly be enjoying a wee dram or two to celebrate winning the prestigious Golden Spurtle trophy, the whisky celebrations goes on into Sunday night with the help of the Ord Ban Restaurant Cafe at Rothiemurchus by Aviemore. This charming local eaterie will be hosting an art house film night featuring the ever-popular classic Whisky Galore! with deli board oatcakes and traditional oatmeal topped cranachan served during the interval and a wee dram for all. To book Tel: 01479 810005. We hope you manage to make it along to some of our whisky based events and join us in raising a glass for a toast to Scotland and all those involved in the whisky making industry.
